IAIA graduating seniors in the Creative Writing BFA program Douglas Suano Bootes (Saponi-Catawba), Veronica A. Clark, Katharina Deiter (Peepeekisis First Nation), and Jamie Natonabah (Navajo Nation) will be reading from original works in poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. Readings will draw from the portfolio created during each student’s academic career and consists of the student’s best writing.

Animation has always played a part of everyday life in mainstream American society and Native American communities. Today, we are seeing a reflection of the state of diversity by the acknowledgement and production of culturally diverse animation.

With funding from the Ford Foundation, IAIA offered two students an opportunity to travel to Kassel, Germany in June to attend documenta 14.  Founded in 1955, documenta is a contemporary art exhibition which takes place every five years.

Join Connective Tissue: New Approaches to Fiber in Contemporary Native Art exhibition artists Merritt Johnson (Mixed descent/Mohawk/Blackfoot/Non-Indigenous), Melissa Cody (Navajo), and David Gaussoin (Picuris/Navajo/French) for a panel discussion on recent developments in Native fiber art.

In April of 2017, Museum Collections Registrar John Joe (Navajo) and IAIA Archivist Ryan Flahive packed a rental van and headed to Washington D.C. to pick up a significant donation from Suzan Shown Harjo (Cheyenne/Hodulgee Muscogee), American Indian activist, lobbyist, policy maker, and 2011 recipient of an IAIA Honorary Doctorate.

This panel will explore the complexities of writing about Indigenous museums and the arts that moves beyond the celebratory and descriptive literature that dominates the field.

MoCNA and the Santa Fe Institute explore the creative process in art and science through a discussion between SFI President David Krakauer and artist Melissa Cody (Navajo)—the event is moderated by SFI Professor Mirta Galesic.

Contemporary Indigenous Discourse Series in Partnership with the Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums (ATALM) + Creative Santa Fe—Native Arts and Policy: Resilience and Rights recognizes the increasing importance and relevance of the cultural community and art within a national and international platform. An introductory poem will be read by Navajo Nation Poet laureate Luci Tapahonso.

Join Pawnee Tribe of Oklahoma citizens, author Walter Echo-Hawk and Kevin Gover, Director of the National Museum of the American Indian, Smithsonian Institution, in a lively discussion on historical fiction novel The Sea of Grass: A Family Tale from the American Heartland.

This panel, moderated by Reconciliation guest curator and former state historian Dr. Estevan Rael-Gálvez, discusses Pueblo and Hispano artists’ responses to the aftermath of last year’s ending of “La Entrada”.
