IAIA 2022 Open House

Mark your calendars for September 21. The Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) and Santa Fe Community College (SFCC) are pleased to partner up for this year’s open house. For the first time, IAIA and SFCC are hosting our open house events on the same day. We encourage you to visit both of our campuses—which are only a six-minute drive or 11-minute bike ride apart—for exciting demos, art exhibits, and campus tours, and to meet students, staff, and faculty at both schools. This event is the perfect opportunity for anyone interested in IAIA or SFCC to learn about our missions, programs, and all we have to offer to the Santa Fe community.

Santa Fe Community College’s open house takes place from 11:00 am–3:00 pm. Attendees can tour art studios, the SFCC greenhouse, and the Algae/Biofuels Lab. See demonstrations of steamroller printmaking, papermaking, jewelry making, bronze pouring, and raku firing. Contribute to an art installation at a Suminagashi (Japanese paper marbling) Workshop where you can create Weathergrams, short poems on paper that will be hung outside in the SFCC courtyard. Check out demonstrations at the planetarium and the Science on Sphere® Theater. Visit the film studio and contemporary Diné (Navajo) photographer Will Wilson’s tintype photo booth. Stop by the Automotive Technology Center for a multi-point inspection of your car. Visit the Culinary Arts Garden for free produce and enjoy Frito pies from the East Wing Eatery from 11:30 am–1:00 pm while grooving to the sounds of DJ Manny Godsey.

IAIA will offer a mix of in-person and livestreamed events from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm as we celebrate IAIA’s sixtieth birthday. If you missed the raku firing at SFCC or want to see either process again, you can at IAIA’s open house. Watch video projections and a demonstration of our one-of-a-kind, fully articulating Digital Dome. Take part in an acting class, listen to readings from our talented BFA and MFA in Creative Writing students and alums, and check out an art show. Tour our beautiful Land Grant vegetable and flower gardens and meet the Thunder Bees who help them grow in our apiary. If you’re still hungry after having a Frito pie at SFCC, you can try an array of menu options from our on-campus café, Bon Appetit.

Look out for more information in the coming weeks as we continue to plan these side-by-side all-ages events. We look forward to seeing you at IAIA and SFCC on September 21!

IAIA is located at 83 Avan Nu Po Road, Santa Fe, NM 87508, and SFCC is located at 6401 Richards Ave, Santa Fe, NM 87508.

“The Open House provides an excellent opportunity to experience our students’ creativity on our beautiful campus with its breathtaking mountain vistas and landscapes. Our open studios and classrooms will showcase demonstrations, film screenings, and digital dome presentations. Guided tours and readings by our creative writing students and alumni will be scheduled and you will have the opportunity to be introduced to the Land-Grant Program’s apiary and our own pollinators, the Thunder Bees.”

About IAIA

The Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA)—the birthplace of contemporary Indigenous American art—has been the educational home for esteemed and innovative artists, writers, filmmakers, performers, and leaders since 1962. IAIA continues to grow on its stunning 140- acre campus in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Named one of the top art institutions globally by UNESCO and the International Association of Art and accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, IAIA offers undergraduate degrees in Cinematic Arts and Technology, Creative Writing, Indigenous Liberal Studies, Museum Studies, Performing Arts, and Studio Arts; graduate degrees in Creative Writing, Studio Arts, and Cultural Administration; and certificates in Broadcast Journalism, Business and Entrepreneurship, Museum Studies, and Native American Art History. The college serves approximately 500 full-time Native and non-Native American students from around the globe, representing nearly a hundred federally recognized tribes.

From its humble beginnings on the Santa Fe Indian School campus, IAIA began collecting and exhibiting its students’ artworks, forming a collection that became the foundation of the world’s premier museum representing contemporary Indigenous arts and cultures—the IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts (MoCNA). MoCNA continues expanding its renowned collection of nearly 10,000 artworks, curating numerous progressive and innovative exhibitions, both traveling and at our museum in downtown Santa Fe.

The theme Making History encompasses IAIA’s and MoCNA’s 2022 events celebrating our rich history and looking forward to our vibrant future. We ask everyone to join us in celebrating IAIA’s sixtieth and MoCNA’s semicentennial anniversaries throughout this monumental year as we continue Making History.
