Native American Heritage Month in November

Nov 1, 2024

Please join me in celebrating Native American Heritage Month in November. As with Indigenous Peoples Day, every day at IAIA is a celebration of Indigenous cultures everywhere, and I acknowledge the importance of Indigenous contributions to our society through language, history, traditions, art, and so much more. This year, Native American Heritage Month in November and Native American Heritage Day on November 29, comes at a pivotal time for Indigenous people in the United States. On October 25, President Joe Biden formally apologized for the government-sponsored boarding school system, which left a legacy of tragedy and trauma that Native people still grapple with today. As we celebrate this month, let us remember and honor our elders who endured this trauma, and let us also celebrate our collective survival and resilience.

IAIA is committed to the fulcrum of transformation that happens through artistic expression. As we celebrate Native American Heritage Month here on campus and beyond, we take so much pride in the multiplicity of ways in which our students transform experience into art, film, craft, writing, and new digital art forms. The path forward is forged now through our own choices, our own vision.

Sincerely,

Dr. Robert Martin (Cherokee Nation)
IAIA President
