IAIA students, faculty, and staff will gather on Thursday, February 14, 2019 for IAIA’s 8th Annual Student Success Summit. This year’s topic is centered around Love and the day includes workshops, presentations, and activities—IAIA loves its students. IAIA is excited to welcome the keynote speaker for the event, Keri Ataumbi (Kiowa) ’96.

IAIA is committed to providing a learning environment and support system that encourages students to achieve their educational goals. As part of the efforts to increase student retention and graduation rates, we will gather to learn from students about your experience at IAIA and use this data to plan for improvement. It will take the entire IAIA community to address the barriers to graduation that affect IAIA students.

To do so requires a strategically planned pathway that tracks how all departments and programs are contributing to some of our mission objectives:

  • Improve student success
  • Strengthen academic programs
  • Build college community

And, additionally:

  • connect through an expressive arts activity, team-building, and self-love workshops
  • learn about strategies from former students on scholarships, fellowships, and internships
  • discussion with academic departments, testimonials, guest speakers, and achievements of alumni and careers

We will host the Scholarship Awards Luncheon, where we recognize our student scholars, and we will announce our 2019 Student of the Year, and there will be several prize drawings including two laptops donated by ASG for students! Students must attend all sessions and must be present to win. IAIA invites you to use your knowledge, collaboration, creativity, respect and integrity to build a strong community. The IAIA Student Success Summit is only open to the IAIA Community.

About Keri Ataumbi

Raised on the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming, Keri Ataumbi (Kiowa) ’96 was exposed to both traditional Native American aesthetics and contemporary art theory and practice from an early age. Her Kiowa mother ran a trading post and her Italian-American father is famous for his bronze sculptures. Ataumbi and her sister were encouraged to pursue their individual interests in art.

Ataumbi attended Rhode Island School of Design before moving to Santa Fe in 1990. After moving to Santa Fe she worked as a landscape designer while attending the Institute of American Indian Arts and eventually received a BFA in painting with a minor in art history from the College of Santa Fe. She currently lives and works in the Cerrillos Hills outside Santa Fe.

In creating what she terms “wearable art,” she is interested in exploring the relationship between jewelry’s capacity as adornment and as sculpture. The aesthetic of Ataumbi’s work blends geometric, modern design with natural, organic undertones.
